NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A North Vancouver community summit looks at outdoor recreation through the lens of women around the world.

Dozens of female athletes and their fans will be attending the second “She Summits” event in North Vancouver Sunday.

It’s not like women haven’t climbed Everest or rafted the Grand Canyon before, but event organizer Carla Cupido says for decades women have faced extra barriers in adventure sports.

“They still think society’s definition of what it means to be female is being small, and not occupying space,” she says.

Cupido says She Summits is about breaking down those walls and tackling social change, by opening peoples’ minds to new ideas.

“I hoping that something will resonate with someone.”

The summit includes mindfulness and meditation workshops and an all women’s mountain bike ride.

It will feature films about environmental disaster, diversity and social change.

Cupido says adventure sports have long been dominated by males, white people and the well-to-do. So the main focus of the event is on gender equality, as well as shifting the way trans and non-binary people are treated in the outdoor community.
