VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Sure, it’s almost Halloween, but there is nothing scary about being a sports fan in Vancouver these days!
The Vancouver Whitecaps are pushing ahead with their historic post-season run this weekend. They’re hoping for their second-ever playoff victory as an MLS squad on Sunday after beating the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday.
James Cybulski from Sportsnet 650 says there is a lot of buzz about the Whitecaps.
“And it’s not just knowing one or two players. Fans are starting to figure out who the starting line-up is and even some of the back-ups. You’re debating line-ups now for the Whitecaps. People genuinely feel that there is a chance in this market. And when was the last time you could say that about a Metro Vancouver sports team?
The first leg of the Whitecaps’ Western Conference Semifinals against the Seattle Sounders takes place Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at BC Place.
Meanwhile, the Canucks are on a four-game winning streak thanks to a 6-2 win over Washington last night.
“Travis Green — everybody’s kind of buying what he’s selling right now, as a team,” says Cybulski. “I don’t think it’s ultimately sustainable right now, the way these players are going. But it’s fun, there’s energy, and there’s a sense of hope for the first time in a long time in this market. And I think a big reason for that is some of the young kids that we’re seeing out there for Vancouver.”
“I think right now, with the injuries for the Vancouver Canucks, at some point it’s going to catch up to them. But this is the team that’s kind of like the Island of Misfit Toys — to remember Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. But it’s this unlikely group of characters — of veterans and castoffs that have worked together and have found a bond. They are playing above and beyond expectations and for now, enjoy it!” he adds.
